Throughout September more than 3,000 organizations across the nation will be participating in National Preparedness Month (NPM). This marks the 10th annual NPM sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the US Department of Homeland Security.
The expressed purpose of National Preparedness Month is to promote emergency preparedness by encouraging all Americans to take action. FEMA and Homeland Security are urging Americans to do this by building an emergency kit, making a plan, being informed, and getting involved.
According to government statistics, in the past decade there have been 50% more disasters declared annually than in the previous ten years. FEMA states that its overall goal for the program is to make preparedness a part of everybody’s daily lives and not just for one month out of each year.
