An 11-year-old girl is recovering from reconstructive surgery at Joe DiMaggio’s Children Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, following a vicious dog attack during a sleepover at a friend’s house.
According to the girl’s father, his daughter was watching a movie at a friend’s house in Royal Palm Beach when she rolled off the couch. When she tried to get up, the family English bulldog/Jack Russel mix attacked her, tearing off almost all of the tissue from her left nostril to her upper lip, which exposed her teeth and gums.
Initially, she was flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center where a surgeon performed an emergency reconstructive surgery that failed to reconnect the tissue gathered at the scene of the attack.
She was later taken to Joe DiMaggio’s Children Hospital, where plastic surgeons used a portion of the girl’s lower lip to complete the upper lip. According to the Miami Herald, this procedure is common for cleft patients.
One of the surgeons said at a press conference that “she had a massive devastating defect that is not something that is seen every day.” He also added that if all goes well, she may not need another procedure.
Meanwhile, the girl is eating through a straw because the recovery process requires that her lips be sewn together for at least three weeks.
